What Isn't Written On A Receipt

What Isn't Written On A Receipt

I wanted to share this with you.

We all want to feel seen. Not admired. Not envied. Simply… seen.

The kind of seeing that says, I remember you.

If you’ve ever stopped by my booth at a market, you’ve probably noticed that I try my best to remember names. Not because I have an amazing memory (I promise it’s terrible), but because I know how meaningful it feels when someone remembers mine.

One customer comes to mind. Hi, Tara… if you’re reading this. 🤍

Every time you visit, I can see your smile when I greet you by name. What you may not know is that those moments stay with me, too.

When someone returns, it tells a small business owner something that isn’t written on a receipt. It says, I enjoyed being here. It says, What you created meant something to me. It says, I remembered you, too. Perhaps that’s why I remember names. Not because I have a good memory, but because I’m grateful yours crossed mine.

Lately, and this past week especially, life has gently reminded me just how much it means to feel seen. Like every season, this one has brought a few unexpected moments. And through it all, I’ve found myself thinking less about the challenges themselves and more about the people who quietly show up, with a kind word, a familiar face, or simply by coming back.

The better something is done, the more effortless it looks. A beautifully prepared meal. A thoughtfully designed home. A small business that feels calm and intentional. From the outside, it all looks… easy. What we rarely see are the early mornings, the late nights (whew!), the revisions, the quiet decisions, and the care that lives behind the finished piece. Maybe that’s true of people, too. We often admire what someone has built without realizing what it took to build it, or what it takes to keep showing up. Maybe we’ve all done that. I know I have. It’s a gentle reminder that everyone is carrying something we can’t always see.

That’s why I’ve been thinking about the quiet ways we remind one another that we matter. Remembering someone’s name. Checking in. Celebrating a milestone. Returning. Sometimes the smallest gestures carry the greatest weight because they say something we don’t hear nearly often enough: I remember you. I’m glad you came back. Our paths crossing mattered to me.

So today, I simply wanted to say thank you. Thank you to the customers who return. Thank you to the ones who stop to chat. Thank you to the people who have welcomed Vigueur into their homes, gifted a candle to someone they love, or taken a moment to tell me about a fragrance that became part of a memory.

You may think you’re simply supporting a small business. But what I remember most isn’t what you purchased. It’s that you came back. And in doing so… You reminded me that what I create matters. But perhaps even more importantly, you reminded me that being remembered does, too.
